Classified by water depth

  - Artificial reefs are divided into nearshore reefs and coastal reefs

  - Nearshore reefs: Reefs for fish such as 사각형 square type, hexagonal type, jumbo type, cylinder type, etc

  - Coastal reefs: Reefs for shellfish, algae, and marine forest plants such as half-sphere type, bridge type, trapezoid type, etc

Classified by function

  - Reefs for fish: Developed for spawning, growing, and feeding fish

  - Reefs for shellfish and algae: Developed to breed, grow, and collect shellfish, and to inhabit and artificially transplant algae seeds

  - Reefs for fish and shellfish: Developed as a multifunctional reef for fish and shellfish

  - Reefs for marine forest plants: Developed to inhabit and grow algae, and to transplant artificial seedlings, enabling the spreading of algae

Classified by form and structure

  - Surface structure type: Large effective areas [Mainly built with concrete for shellfish and algae along the coast line and marine forest reef]

  - Frame structure type: Frame construction [Large steel structure based reefs serving as fish habitats in nearshore areas]
